Circulation blockages in the 12 channels

CIRCULATION BLOCKAGES IN THE 12 CHANNELS (see chapter XXIV)

In chronic pathologies, energy stagnations in the channels are the manifestation, the consequence of disorders located deeper, at the level of organs and viscera. The main points to be treated are then those on the trunk and the head (Shu/Mu points, the central Extraordinary Channels points…).

At a more superficial level, the circulation in the channels can be disturbed by an obstruction (like a road traffic-am or a clogged pipe) at one point or between two points, essentially in their peripheral path, i.e., on the limbs.

Overall control

One possibility is the horizontal interrogation on the surface (epidermis) of the lateral side of the 5th metatarsal, in the longitudinal axis (see picture 1).

Interrogation on the surface of the lateral side of the 5th metatarsal in the longitudinal axis

Determining the blocked channels

It is done through a crosswise interrogation of the dermis of the radial groove (exactly where the practitioner places his/her fingers for pulse taking). A blockage in the Earth position indicates a disturbance in the circulation of the Spleen and/or Stomach channels (see picture 2).

Disturbance in the circulation of the Spleen and/or the Stomach channels

Correction of the disturbed channels

The overall control indicates the side to be treated. The therapist strokes the channel with his/her fingertips from the base of the limb to its extremity (or in the other way) until he feels an « obstacle » under his/her hand. It is essential that he/she does not focus his attention on his hand, the « sweeping » movement of the channel must start from his belly and the sensation of blockage is as much under his hand as in his belly. He then passes his hand 2 or 3 times until the blockage sensation disappears (see picture 3).

The stomach channel
The therapist can assess the effectiveness of his correction by redoing the overall control or the test in the radial groove.

Spleen immune function

In this period of coronavirus pandemic, special attention should be given to the spleen/thymus system.

Specific controls

Surface crosswise interrogation of the sternal manubrium
Surface (epidermis) crosswise interrogation of the sternal manubrium (picture 1).
Dermis crosswise interrogation of the inner face of the big toe's metatarsophalangeal joint

Dermis crosswise interrogation of the inner face of the big toe’s metatarsophalangeal joint (picture 2).

Correction

The therapist puts one hand on the Spleen centre located on the lateral face of the RIGHT ribcage, the other hand searches for the point linked to that centre on the Spleen channel (SP 1 to SP 11) on the blocked side identified in the specific controls (SP 10 and SP 3 are the most frequent ones) (picture 3).

SP 10 and SP 3 are the most frequent ones
Related to the Spleen function, the therapist must also control:

Notes:

  • We emphasize the important frequency in the imbalance of the Spleen function among patients manifesting post covid-19 effects such as ongoing fatigue, muscle pain, headaches.
  • These controls are one element of the reading grid which must be corrected altogether.
  • The treatment is possible through a light piece of clothing and the therapist can wear protective gloves.

The center of the spleen channel

The center of the spleen channel

The SPLEEN CENTER located on the lateral side of the RIGHT hemi-thorax, at the level of the lower ribs (called « centre of the Spleen channel ») is related to 2 functions of the Spleen:
Epidermis control on the sternal manubrium
Dermis control on the lateral side of the big toe
  • Immune function. Pictures 1 and 2 show the specific controls of this function, respectively on the epidermis (surface) on the sternal manubrium and in the dermis on the lateral side of the big toe metatarsophalangeal joint.
Interrogation of the metatarsophalangeal joint, at the osseous level
  • Blood production (which is often be found to be disturbed in Blood deficiency syndromes)

Specific control: crosswise interrogation of the metatarsophalangeal joint, at the osseous level (picture 3)

Overall control of the centre

  • Crosswise interrogation on the surface (epidermis) of the centre with the fingers of one hand (picture 4)
  • Confirmation by a crosswise interrogation on the surface on the lateral side of the LEFT hemi-thorax, at the level of the spleen organ, with the PALM of one hand (picture 4).
Correction of the left SP 10 point in relation to the Spleen centre

The correction is made with one hand on the centre, the other one looks for the point connected to the centre, on the Spleen channel, from SP 1 to SP 11, on the blocked side in the specific controls (picture 6 shows the correction of the left SP 10 point in relation to the Spleen centre).

Centre of the Spleen chain

The second centre related to Spleen is the « centre of the Spleen chain  » (chain from SP 12 to SP 21 points), located in the middle of the anterior face of thigh and related to the 6 phases of the disease (see picture 7).

The spleen chain

SPLEEN CHAIN AND THE 6 PHASES OF THE DISEASE

Understanding the relationship between the SPLEEN CHAIN AND THE 6 PHASES OF THE DISEASE was an important step in the development of the reading grid (see chapter XI, paragraph B).

Brief reminders

a) the 6 phases of the disease are related to the 6 paired channels, the 6 layers of defence, from surface to depth (Jacques Pialoux, « Guide to Acupuncture and Moxibustion, p 45)

Yang phases

Yin Phases

b) the decoding of the Spleen chain, from SP 12 to SP 21, follows the order of the function Back-Shu points

Overall control:

It is done through a surface crosswise interrogation in the middle of the anterior side of the thigh (see picture 1). This area is the centre of the Spleen chain.

Specific controls which determine the phase and energetic functions that are disturbed, are detailed in chapter XI, B.

Crosswise interrogation in the middle of the anterior side of the thigh

Correction

The general principle for correction is as follows:

  • In the Yang phases, the therapist corrects the centre in relation to the corresponding point of the phase, whatever the organ, viscera or anatomical region concerned (example: SP 15 or SP 16 for the inflammatory phase – see picture 2).
  • In the Yin phases, the therapist corrects the centre in relation to the corresponding point of the organ or viscera disturbed (example: SP 16 for Stomach, SP 17 for Spleen).

As for the Minister Fire:

The related points are not on the SP channel and were determined by palpatory research:

  • TW -> TW 15 – GB 21
  • PC -> ST 10

As for the TW, blockages are often on thyroid and parathyroid glands.

As for the PC, blockages are either in the heart region (cardiovascular pathologies) or in a body region in relation to neoplasm phase (phase VI).

Disturbances in the Spleen chain are frequent and important to treat.

The therapist corrects the centre in relation to the corresponding point of the phase, whatever the organ, viscera or anatomical region concerned

The energy movement of the uterus

the ENERGY MOVEMENT OF THE UTERUS

To study the ENERGY MOVEMENT OF THE UTERUS – an anterior rotation movement – the therapist interrogates, with the palm of hand, the dermis facing the sacrum with an impulse directed upwards, cephalically (see picture and topic on the energy movement of the viscera).

If he/she cannot « cross » the dermis, if he/she feels a resistance to his/her thrust, it is because the energy does not circulate well in the uterus, its vital rhythm, called motility in osteopathy, is disturbed.

We remind you that the therapist must be sure, before interrogating the dermis, that he can mobilize it on the underlaying tissue.

The possible blockage will only appear in the cephalic direction. After treatment, he/she will be able to assess the effectiveness of the corrections made by redoing this control.

In gynaecological pathologies, the EXTRAORDINARY CHANNELS are often concerned (see chapter IX) :

  • Ren Mai
  • Dai Mai (GB 26 – GB 27 – GB 28)
  • Yin Wei Mai (in relation to the emotional plane: PC 6, GB 2..)
  • Chong Mai: SP 4

Also verify the lower Dan Tian (see post dated December 13th), SP 6 (see chapter XXVIII), the 3 foot Yin channels…

The energy movement of the viscera

LE MOUVEMENT D’ENERGIE DES VISCERES

All body tissues are animated by rhythmic micromovements whose frequency varies according to their embryological origin (endoderm, mesoderm, ectoderm). Earlier (pre) Heaven Qi (before birth) is the source, the cause of this vital rhythm called Primary Respiratory Movement in Osteopathy (we use the term movement rather than mechanism). Passive listening allows to perceive this energy movement which takes the shape, under the hand, of a continuous coming and going. The frequency for bones and muscles, derived from mesoderm, is 10 cycles a minute. When the energy does not circulate, this rhythmic swaying disappears, either the therapist has a sensation of a stiffness inside the tissue or his (her) hand is always drawn in the same direction.

To study the energy movement in the viscera, the practitioner « questions » the dermis facing it in a precise direction which is given by the « migration » (move from one location to another) of the viscera during embryonic development. For example, the stomach rotates 90° clockwise around its longitudinal axis passing through its two extremities and rotates around its antero-posterior axis during 7th and 8th weeks.

To study the stomach, the therapist directs the impulse into the dermis, with the palm of hand, in an oblique direction caudally and medially, at 45°(see pictures 1 and 2). For the liver, the impulse is directed cephalically and laterally at 45°(see picture 3). It is a faster and more efficient control than passive listening. The energy does not circulate properly in the viscera if the therapist cannot « cross » the dermis. Before interrogating it, the therapist must make sure the dermis can be mobilized on the underlaying tissue with a usual palpation. The control for other viscera is described in chapter III.

This test does not give, however, the origin of the disorder that the practitioner will find in the reading grid studied in the book. He/she will be able to assess the effectiveness of the corrections made by repeating these tests.

The chong mai

The chong mai

The subject of this article is the CHONG MAI, an Extraordinary Channel called « the Sea of the 5 organs (Zang) and 6 viscera (Fu) » in the Ling Shu.

The Chong Mai distributes the energies (one, nutritive, the other, defensive) produced by the 3 burners to the 11 organs/viscera and the 12 channels, which will utilize them (see chapter IX: the Extraordinary Channels).

The Chong Mai points

(called function Mu points by Jacques Pialoux)

ST 30 is the entry and starter point. It is utilized when the energies remain blocked in the burners. The points from KD 11 to KD 21 control the distribution of energies to the organs and viscera.

Distribution order is the following:

Overall control

The tests on the different tissue areas in resonance to the Chong Mai give the same information. In case of Chong Mai disturbance, the therapist cannot « cross » the tissue when he (she) interrogates it transversally to the longitudinal axis of the body, he has the sensation of a « wall », an obstacle (see chapter 1: the energetic palpation). These areas are :

Picture 1
  • the first metacarpal’s head, at the osseous level (see picture1)
Picture 2
  • the dermis of the inguinal fold (picture 2)
Picture 3
  • the epidermis (surface) of the anterior upper thigh (palpation with the palm of hand) (picture 3)
  • the epidermis (surface) of the anterior upper thigh (palpation with fingers). It is the »centre » area for Chong Mai, utilized for correction. This centre is the same one for the Ren Mai (see chapter VI: introduction to the centres).

Determining the disturbed energetic function

The interrogation of the Minister Fire-Earth-Metal positions from top to bottom

It is done through a crosswise interrogation of the radial groove, at the osseous level, above the radial pulses, with the traditional distribution of the different positions (see chapter VI).

Picture 4 shows the interrogation of the Minister Fire-Earth-Metal positions from top to bottom. The palpation of the related points allows to differentiate the organ from the viscera.

This test is the same one for the Jing Bie Mu points (classic front-Mu points).

Correction

The therapist puts one hand on the centre, the other one on the Chong Mai point related to the disturbed organ or viscera. Picture 5 shows the correction of KD 16 point.

Note: an organ or viscera is correctly nourished in depth by the 3 burners if its function Front-Mu point (Chong Mai point), its function Back-Shu point (see chapter VII) and its Jing Bie Front-Mu point (the classic Front-Mu point is related to the “burner” function – see also chapter VII) are open.

Interpretation of blackages in the reading grid

INTERPRETATION OF BLOCKAGES IN THE READING GRID

To look for disturbances in the energy system we « read » the body tissues that are in resonance with its various components. The energy system is reflected in the anatomy (bones, muscles, dermis..). A reading grid that links a given energetic function to a specific tissue area, has been developed after long palpating observations.

The key to reading is the interrogation of the tissues, i. e. the therapist studies their response to a stimulation (an impulse given by the therapist).

2 types of interrogation

(see chapter I : the energetic palpation)

  • An acupuncture point is called « open » if it responds to a vertical impulse on the surface (epidermis), whether the skin tissue is hard or distended. Our approach is indeed based on the notion of INFORMATION. The epidermis and the nervous system derive from the same embryological tissue, the ectoderm. This close relationship between the two structures remains after birth and their main function lies in the transmission of information, in COMMUNICATION.

In the reading grid, searches are most often made through a horizontal interrogation with an impulse directed transversely to the longitudinal axis of the body. To be interpreted,  the possible blockage must only appear in this direction. (Reminder: a blocked tissue cannot be « crossed » by the therapist without resistance)

Let’s take the example of the control of the classic Back-Shu points, called Jing Bie Back-Shu points, in the dermis of the medial face of the knee (see picture1) : to be related to a disturbance in the Back-Shu points, the blockage in the dermis must disappear if the therapist changes the direction of the impulse as shown on pictures 2 and 3.

Picture 1 : Control of the classic Back-Shu points in the dermis of the medial of the knee
Picture 2
Picture 3

Tissue areas that are blocked  whatever the direction given to the impulse cannot be interpreted according to the reading grid. Note that, if the therapist can mobilize a dermis area on the underlaying layer, the possible blockage will appear in only one direction, and vice versa.

The causes of blockages that appear in all directions are :

  • either a structural problem: pathologies as, for instance, arthritis or arthrosis deformans, serious lymphoedema, adherent scar, alter the structure of the tissue
  • or an energy disorder :

a) as for the dermis areas, the therapist will find mainly a disturbance in the Back-Shu points (Jing Bie or function), the Spleen chain or the traumatic centre and, specially for the cranial dermis, in the tendino-muscular channels

b) as for the epidermis (surface) areas, the blockage will be in the emotional chains of Du Mai, Stomach and Gall Bladder channels

c) as for the osseous level, the therapist will find a disturbance in the Front-Mu points (Jing Bie or function)

After correction, the possible blockage appears in one direction.

The outer pathway of the urinary bladder

The outer pathway of the urinary bladder

We regularly treat infants and older children for fears, anxiety manifested by sleep disturbances, night terrors, restlessness, excessive crying, eczema, abdominal pain, enuresis… The main corrections are on THE OUTER PATHWAY OF THE URINARY BLADDER CHANNEL, from UB 42 to UB 53, which is related to the Five Shen (Shen, Hun, Po, Yi and Zhi). Referring to modern research in psychology, this chain is used to treat, among others, birth trauma (the anxiety experienced in the birth canal as the basic model for all future anxieties – see Otto Rank and Stanislav Grof’s work) and Ancestral Memory (see the psychogenealogical approach of Anne Ancelin Schutzenberger, « The Ancestral Syndrome « ).

Decoding :

See chapter XIII, paragraph A.

Specific controls

  • dermis crosswise interrogation of the lateral side of the ankle (see picture 1)
  • surface crosswise interrogation of the clavicle, with the palm of hand (see picture 2)

Determining the disturbed energetic function

The therapist 's fingers on the Water- Wood-Fire positions from the left to the right
  • It is done through a surface crosswise interrogation of the cubital groove, above the radial pulses. Picture 3 shows the therapist ‘s fingers on the Water- Wood-Fire positions from the left to the right.
  • Confirmation through an osseous vertical interrogation of the metatarsal bones
M5 -> Fire - Minister Fire

Correction

The therapist puts one hand on the occipital centre (occiput- C1-C2 – see picture 5), the other hand on the point related to the disturbed organ or viscera (the related point is closed). Note that

Tradition forbids the use of needles in children before puberty.

2 essential points related to fears:

  • UB 52 (in relation to KD)
  • UB 53 (in relation to PC)

Emotional shocks, anniversary of a traumatic event in the family history and how not to mention the coronavirus pandemic, can reactivate blockages in the outer pathway of the UB channel.

The energetic palpation

the energetic palpation

An acupuncture point is a « transceiver ». It receives and transmits INFORMATION. As a result of external aggressions (climatic, infectious, toxic, traumatic…) or internal (emotional…) , some points close and no longer communicate with the energy system causing stagnations and deficiencies in the channels and the body.

A well-functioning point « answers » when « interrogated ». It responds to a stimulation, a VERTICAL impulse located on the surface of the point, at the epidermis level (see picture1).

A closed point does not respond. This palpation can be acquired with little training and practice- no extraordinary talent is necessary- and it is reliable (all therapists have the same result).

If a practitioner tests all the points in a patient first, he/she will find that many of them are closed because, on the one hand, a blockage at a deep level has an effect on many channels and points. For example, ST 14 and ST 18 are the points related to Liver on the emotional chain of Stomach. A ST 14 blockage following an emotional shock (the point does not respond) leads to an energy stagnation in the Liver channel and possibly in other channels), some points of the Liver channel are closed but using these will be ineffective since the cause is at the ST 14 level.

On the other hand, the body puts up barriers and closes points to protect itself. If the therapist removes them prematurely, without having treated the cause, this can lead to « decompensation ».

Figure 2
Figure 3

The reading grid, through a specific palpation of tissues (epidermis, dermis, tendon, bone) that are in resonance with the different energetic levels, allows to find out where the body is in need and what points have to be corrected at the time of examination.

This palpation most often consists in a CROSSWISE HORIZONTAL INTERROGATION (transversally to the longitudinal axis of the body) (see pictures 2-3-4).

Figure 4
Figure 5
Figure 6

For example, the emotional chain of the Stomach channel  is controlled by a crosswise interrogation of the dermis facing the patella (picture 5) and the epidermis facing the pisiform (picture 6).

Figure 7

The disturbed energetic function is determined through an epidermis crosswise interrogation of the radial groove, above the radial pulses (see picture 7).

To correct the disorder, the therapist only has to show and inform the body of the points determined by the reading grid. As soon as the body has integrated the information, the points open. There is no mechanical action on the point, no tonification nor dispersion. Only the information matters. Only the tissues know.

After a complete treatment (30 to 40 minutes per session), all the points respond again (except in the case of chronic pathologies).
